Taylor Hayes was recently named the 2014-2015 Captain of the University of Texas at Austin Men’s Rugby team. Hayes began his rugby career at age 11 when he was living in Qatar. After playing four years there his family moved to Canada. He began playing at Webber Academy, where he is still the all-time leading scorer, leading his team to an undefeated 14-0 season during his first year there, earning Hayes the year‘s MVP award. During this time Hayes also played for the Calgary Canucks and the Alberta U18 for two years. In 2011 he played for the High School All American’s 7s team.
Hayes enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin, where he had an immediate impact on the Texas Rugby program’s success. During this time Hayes has played in every major American collegiate competition for both 7s and 15s. In 2013 Hayes tried out for the USA U20 squad and in 2014 was called out to play with the USA Hawks 7s team.
Hayes’ abilities extend far beyond just those on the pitch. Hayes has served as the team’s Recruiting Chair and Media Chair. He works closely with the staff to handle the program’s online presence. When he’s not doing rugby he’s in the classroom, striving to become a professional in the energy industry. Hayes is a senior Mechanical Engineering major within the Cockrell School of Engineering, where he is also involved with organizations such as the Formula One Society of Automotive Engineers. During the last two years Hayes has maintained summer internships with BP Global in their North America Gas and Gulf of Mexico operations.
Hayes’ many achievements in and off the field are why the coaches consider him an Outstanding Longhorn. We look forward to seeing where Taylor will lead Texas Rugby during the 2014-2015 season. Hook’em \m/
