Tommy Gilmore was recently named the 2014-2015 Vice-Captain of the University of Texas at Austin Men’s Rugby team. Gilmore began his rugby career while he was attending Loyola High School in Los Angeles, California. During that time he played with the Los Angeles Cougars. Gilmore then arrived in Austin immediately seeking out the rugby team and becoming a huge asset. For the past four years Gilmore has started in the second row, taking his place as one of the most dominant locks Texas has ever had. Hugely active, Gilmore places near the top in nearly every category Texas uses to track its players. Tommy was also a key player in the Texas 7s program in Fall 2013 before fully committing himself to the 15s program.
Tommy isn’t only a major impact on the pitch, but in the administration as well, spending the last few years as a team officer. This year he is the Recruitment Chair; his actions being crucial in introducing new athletes at Texas to the sport, bringing in over 200 potential recruits. He has also made a push to change the way Texas recruits high schoolers, which has had an immediate positive impact. Gilmore is a senior Spanish major, with Business minor, so he has a wide array of networking abilities, helping bring in overseas students, who continue to leave a lasting mark on Texas Rugby.
Tommy Gilmore not only stepped up his abilities as a rugby player this year, but has stepped up his leadership abilities as well. His dedication and contributions to Texas Rugby are why the coaching staff considers Gilmore an Outstanding Longhorn.
