On Nov. 26th, Texas hosted The University of Queensland in a hard fought battle for both sides. University of Queensland has been on their USA tour playing top-notch teams from states across the country. UQ was by far Texas Rugby’s most difficult opponent of the season. They were bigger, stronger, and faster than anyone we have faced, as majority of their players had been playing since early years of grade school. That didn’t rattle Texas though. We brought out our best. 7s players, who just two days earlier were wrapping up a weekend consisting of six-matches against the best teams in the nation, played. Several recent alumni even kitted up.
“We wanted every single one of the Queensland guys to remember the day they played The University of Texas. We wanted to leave an impact on one of the greatest teams there is and I feel we did just that. I am very proud of the effort that the boys gave out there,” said head coach Chris Hopps after the match.
Having spoken to many of the UQ players after the match, several said that we were one of the toughest teams they’d played during their tour. Many said that Texas was definitely the hardest hitting team of the tour. We definitely take pride in that.
The developmental 15s season for Texas Rugby has ended and the actual 15s season will begin February 8th as Texas plays SFA (Away) and UNT (Home). We would like to give a special thanks to all of the coaching staff for their hard work and commitment, a special thanks to the alumni who put on the Longhorn jersey one more time, and to all the new players and old who came out all through the fall and committed themselves to bleeding burnt orange for the sport of rugby.
We would also like to give a special thanks and sincere farewell to player Danny Cotton. Cotton, an international student from The University of Queensland, came to The University of Texas at Austin in January 2013 for a year abroad, joined the team immediately and has made a huge impact on the program. He started at 8-man during the Spring 2013 season, where he made the Allied Rugby Conference All-Conference team. He also played on the 7s team, participating in both the 2013 Collegiate Rugby Championship and the 2013 USA Rugby College 7s National Championship. He is a dear friend to us all and he will be missed. Thank you, Danny Cotton, for all the contributions and experiences you brought to the team, and for making others know what it means to be a Longhorn.
